Succulents in Vases

There’s so much to love about succulents. You can get them with lacy leaves, spiny, green, white; leaves so plump you want to pinch them.

This was a super-easy project. I just filled some vases I already had with soil (and one giant margarita glass from T.J. Maxx for $7), and planted a variety of succulents from the hardware store. I love the terrarium effect, and it’s great for a windowsill or centerpiece, or on a credenza or mantel.

Now for the real truth, in the spirit of full disclosure: I took this photo a while ago. I totally killed all of these. I am NOT a green thumb, though would love to give this another go. For Round 2, I would get some serious input from a nursery, move them closer to a window, and water them less.

Have any succulent displays you love? Share them (and your tips for keeping them alive) here on flickr.

I tried this very same project last year and all but one of mine died! The roots basically rotted on the plants within a few days even though I didn’t water very much. (The soil may have been too moist to begin with.) I may have to try again because they looked fabulous while they lasted.

Surely there’s hope for us yet, Linz. I love the little buggers too much to give up on them so easily.
